Autoclave – Definition, Function and area of application
What are autoclaves?
Autoclaves are gas-tight, sealable pressure vessels that are used for the thermal treatment of constructions and materials in the overpressure range. As a rule, autoclaves are equipped with quick closing doors that enable the pressure vessels to be opened and closed quickly.
Development of autoclaves
The first versions of autoclaves were developed as early as 1679 by the English polymath Robert Hooke. Today, they have developed into complex designs for a wide range of applications - from small application volumes to large production quantities.
Area of application for autoclaves
Industries that rely on the use of autoclaves include the aviation and glass industries, racing, medical and food technology. In addition, laboratory autoclaves are used for research. Examples of their use are, for example:
- Steam pressure sterilisation of medical items or food. Due to the enormous heat exposure as well as the high pressure inside the autoclave, the protein of the cells of the individual microorganisms coagulates and kills them.
- Steam curing of building materials such as sand-lime bricks and aerated concrete
- Vulcanisation of tyres
- Lamination of fibre composite materials
